For more than two decades I have greeted visitors at the Mitchell Tolle Studio and Gallery in Berea, Kentucky. People ask many questions, but mostly, they want to know where Mitchell finds inspiration for his paintings. There are many answers because it seems that each painting has its own unique beginning.
The story behind this painting began when Mitchell's father arrived one day bearing a precious gift, the flag that draped his own father's casket. Mitchell was ready. Our oldest grandson, Alex, was here, visiting for the summer. Mitchell had him dressed in an over-sized flannel shirt with red suspenders. On the way to a place where the light was perfect, he explained the plan to his father.
"When we get there, don't get out the flag until everything is set," Mitchell said. "Then, when you and Alex are in place, I want you to tell him about his great-great-grandfather. Tell him as much as you want. Then explain to him about this flag."
During the process of getting everything ready, there was conversation and laughter. Soon, the scene was set. Dad's countenance changed as he slid the aged treasure from its cover. Even though he was barely seven, Alex was captivated by the folded flag and the serious tone of his great-grandfather's deep voice.
