Twenty years ago, as a struggling artist, I came to discover the beautiful, gentle people of the ridges and valleys of my native mountain home and they became my favorite subjects.
At about the same time, I became acquainted with Garry Barker and his unique way of writing about his heritage with such sensitivity and passion. I told Garry that his work and my art should be together in a book.
He agreed.
Once in the early '80's, we actually did some work on the book, but we weren't ready.
During the passing of time, Garry and I did our work apart from each other, and in our own way.
Then at last the time had come. The dream had become reality.
In the paintings, drawings, and words in the book you will find a very honest expression. You will find a common thread in, that these people have touched our lives.
You will meet people who understand the worth of a thing. Folks who know what is important. The vanishing remnant which grasps the power of the human touch.
