"We didn't have material things so we used our imagination," Mitchell says. "Cardboard boxes could be houses or barns. Or you could put can lids on them for headlights and make a car."
The Tolle home was always filled with music. And there was art.
Mitchell was 3 years old when he watched his dad draw a picture of Christ walking on the water on a piece of white cardboard.
"I was fascinated that he was able to take something which had no value and make it into something very special by drawing a few lines on it," he says. "I knew then that I wanted to be an artist."
Mitchell inherited a strong work ethic from his parents, but the restrictions of a job had little appeal to him.
